Google is always seemingly up to something new regarding search results and AI. In early March, Google made a big announcement stating that they would be launching a new type of search results page besides expanding their AI Overviews: AI Mode.
This new AI Mode is slated to revolutionize how we interact with Google’s products and services, offering a more intuitive and powerful experience.
Here Is What You Need to Know
AI Mode uses a custom version of Gemini 2.0 and will become a new search options tab (like Photos, Maps, and Shopping) that delivers AI-generated summaries tailored to user questions.
Unlike traditional search results, AI Mode offers detailed information, which could make it quicker and easier to find the insights you need.
And just like with ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other conversational AI tools, you can also ask follow-up questions and receive helpful web links within its answers. However, unlike these other tools, in classic Google fashion, they will also allow ads to appear in AI Mode results.
Early Insights to AI Mode
Given that AI Mode is experimental at the moment, with only Google One AI Premium subscribers and a select handful of testers having access, we don’t know too much about the platform at the moment.
However, SEO Aleyda Solis has published some insights on what she has seen so far:
- AI Mode will only sometimes include highlighted blue links in answers that go to sources it has gotten information from
- AI Mode relies heavily on AI Overviews inclusion and the “Dive Deeper in AI Mode” button in AIOs
- AI Mode gives more structured and comprehensive answers – most times the answers overlap with answers in AIOs, but AI Mode will not always cite the same sources
- When it comes to informational user queries, AI Mode gives a good “expanded” and factual experience
- AI Mode for ecommerce is less than appealing and has a suboptimal user experience, lacking visuals and key product information, as shown below

While you can join Google Lab’s waitlist to try and gain early access, it’s unclear how many people Google will ultimately give access to.
