An Intern’s Experience at Sixth City Marketing

Samantha Riley - Sixth City Marketing
Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Samantha Riley, but most people just call me Sam. I work at Sixth City Marketing as an intern. Unlike most internships that provide one focus area, Sixth City has exposed me to so many. It’s hard to keep track!

I am going into my third year at The Ohio State University, where I am majoring in Graphic Design and pursuing a minor in Marketing. Prior to joining the Sixth City Marketing team, my knowledge on business was limited to the classroom and a chocolate shop I worked at. But Sixth City Marketing has definitely expanded on that. They have shown me how graphic design and marketing relate, especially when it comes to website design. I even got to take a stab at coding, and the nerdy side of me couldn’t get enough!

Coding has been one of my favorite things I have learned while interning with Sixth City Marketing. When John first introduced me to it, I thought there was no way I would ever understand it. I was happily mistaken. John taught me the basics and I learned how to set off paragraphs and create headlines and sub headlines. I was exposed to divs, CSS, and inline styling.

After that I couldn’t get enough. I went on to learn about floating elements. Once I mastered this, I was able to align elements next to one another. Although I am far from a coding expert, I enjoy what I have learned and cannot wait to see what comes next.

Sixth City Marketing has taught me many things I would not learn from a textbook. John introduced me to the importance of search engine optimization, something my professors have never spoken to me about. As a graphic designer, I can create a website, but what good is it if no one can find it?

In other classes, I feel as if I already have an upper hand. I took a class on coding, for example, and I found that much of what I was learning was repetitive from what John had already taught me.

The knowledge I gained from interning at Sixth City doesn’t end there. I have been able to create pay-per-click ads, sitemaps, landing pages, and so much more.

The atmosphere in the office is also terrific. The team has been welcoming, and they are as eager to teach as I am to learn. The experiences I have gained are one of a kind, and I cannot wait to see where they will go next.
